Tigers split at Quad County triangular

The Morris Area / Hancock / Chokio-Alberta Tiger wrestlers competed in the Big Ole Tournament in Alexandria on Saturday, Feb. 1. Several Tigers had to sit out due to match count issues–wrestlers are only allowed 36 matches prior to the end of season tournaments. The Tigers have had three important duals during this last week of competition and the Tiger Invitational tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8, so a few key wrestlers were kept out of the competition last Saturday. At the Quad County triangular on Monday, Feb. 3, the Tigers beat BOLD and lost to Quad County – a combination of wrestlers from MACCRAY and YME.

Big Ole Tournament

As a team, the Tigers finished in sixth out of 10 teams, scoring 85 points and six Tigers place individually. Kerkoven-Murdock-Sunburg finished first with 169 points followed by Moorhead with 167 points and Frazee with 154 points.

Senior Myles Smith was No. 3 seed in the tournament and finished as the runner up at 145 pounds. After receiving a bye in the first round, Smith pinned Nick Meyer of K-M-S in 4:39. In the semifinals, Smith then beat No. 2 seed Tristan Johnson of Alexandria 6-5. In the finals, Smith lost to No. 1 seed Nick Warne of Rocori in a close decision 9-8.

Senior Jordan Thooft finished third, also receiving a bye in round one of the 170 pound matches. Thooft pinned Ben Lien of Moorhead in 3:53 to get to the semifinal round. In the semis, Thooft was pinned by No. 1 seed Ryan Stottler of Minnewaska in 3:00. In the consolation semifinals, Thooft won by a decision 7-5 over McKalen Heldland of Frazee. Lastly, Thooft pinned Lien, again, in 3:06 for third place.
