Tigers add two wins

Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta hopes to get back into the winning streak, picking up two wins against Melrose and Paynesville this past week. The boy’s basketball team hosted Melrose on Friday, Jan. 17. The game proved to be a test of wills being tied at the end of regulation play, but the Tigers found a way to win the battle in OT. Then, on Tuesday, Jan. 21, the Tigers tipped off in Paynesville against the Bulldogs. Holding a six point lead at the half, the Tigers outscored their opponent again in the second to take the win 67-53 over the Bulldogs.

After losing their first eight games, the Tigers have built up some poise on the court, winning five out of their past seven games. After Tuesday nights game, the Tigers are 5-10 on the season.

Morris/C-A 69, Melrose 63

Tied at 58 at the end of regulation, Jordan Arbach scored six overtime points and Noah Grove sealed the deal with two free throws with 30 seconds left to lift the Tigers over Melrose on Friday, Jan. 17.

Grove hit 13 points in the first half to send the Tigers into the break up by 10 at 38-28, but out of the break the Tigers were outscored 35-31 by the help of seven threes from the Dutchmen team.

Despite Seth Noll having 24 points on eight threes to keep the Dutchmen in the game, it wasn’t enough as the Tigers outscored Melrose 9-5 in the extra session to win 69-63.

Eric Staebler scored a game-high 25 points and added seven rebounds and four assists.

Grove finished with 15 points, and Andrew Goulet had four points and five steals for the Tigers.

Morris/C-A 67, Paynesville 53

Staebler scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Grove had 13 points with three three pointers to lead the Tigers in the win over Paynesville Area on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

Paynesville, led by Andrew Topp’s 16 points and 10 rebounds, fell to 5-3 in conference and 8-8 overall, while the Tigers sit at 3-6 in the conference and 5-10 overall.

The next matchup for the Tigers is Friday, Jan. 24 in Lac Qui Parle Valley. The Tigers are back in Morris for a conference game against Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday, Jan. 28 before traveling to Bird Island to battle the BOLD Warriors on Friday, Jan. 31. On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Tiger boys and girls go to Barrett for a double header game against West Central Area.
