MAHACA splits at Minnewaska

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta Tigers hit the mat for a triangular wrestling duel in Glenwood against the Minnewaska Lakers and United (Dawson-Boyd, Lac Qui Parle, Montevideo) on Thursday, Jan. 2. The Tigers split in wrestling action, beating Minnewaska and losing to United.

MAHACA 46, Minnewaska 33

Four forfeits help lift the Tigers over Minnewaska in round one of the triangular on Thursday, Jan. 2. The Tigers took a 46-30 victory over the Minnewaska Lakers.

Christian Athey started off the match with a forfeit win for the Tigers at 106 pounds.

Minnewaska wrestler Joseph Weaver tied the match up with a pin over Matt Munsterman in :40 seconds at 113 pounds.

Minnewaska got another win by a close 3-0 decision over Jared Rohloff at 120 pounds.

Two forfeit victories by Mitchell Ascheman and Diego Arreguin at 126 and 132 pounds, respectively, put the Tigers up 18-9 as team.

Then Travis Ostby and Garrett Kelling came to the mat for the 138 pound matchup. Ostby pinned Kelling in 1:45 for another Tiger win.

Dillan Johnson (145 pounds) kept the momentum going with a pin over Maccelo Arrendondo in 3:19.

Myles Smith took a win by a major decision 17-4 over Weston Lardy in the 152 pound matchup.

Minnewaska won by pins over Jerid Berning and Aaron Nelson in the 160 and 182 pound rounds, respectively.

Tiger Danny Tracy (170 pounds) and Laker Brad Jacobs (195 pounds) both took their victories by forfeit.

Alec Gausman (220 pounds) pinned JR Formo in 2:44 to increase the Tiger lead 46-27.

Kashawn Brown didn’t waste time in pinning Tiger Jacob Sperr in the 285 pound heavyweight round. Brown pinned Sperr in :38 seconds to get the Lakers to 33 points.

United 62, MAHACA 7

Powerhouse wrestlers of United dominated the Tigers 62-7 in the triangular in Minnewaska with six pins total out of 14 weight classes.

The Tigers got two individual wins in the team loss. Smith won by decision over Mitch Kwilinski 4-1 in the 145 pound matchup and in 220 pound action, Alec Gausman won by an 8-0 major decision over Markus Kranz.

With cancellation of the late-added Benson meet this past Saturday due to weather-related issues, the Tigers are still set to take the mat in MACCRAY Tuesday, Jan. 7. Then continuing the season on the road, the Tigers travel to Paynesville on Friday, Jan. 10.
