Tiger seniors finish up successful baseball career

Eight Morris Area/ Chokio-Alberta seniors wrapped up successful careers of baseball when the Tigers finished third in the 2013 Section 3AA Tournament.

Tom Holland, Jacob Torgerson, Logan Manska, Tyler Henrichs, Lincoln Berget, Mac Beyer, Tanner Picht, and Chandler Erickson were all instrumental in the Tigers’ success this season, as well as during previous campaigns and summer leagues.

With a son among those seniors, head coach Mark Torgerson  has been following this group since their Little League debut.

“I pretty much coached them all the way through,” he said.

“This group began playing baseball on the diamonds at Wells Park when they were seven years old and continue to play the game with a passion through their senior year,” explained Torgerson. “They have set a great example for younger players and have represented our communities with a great brand of baseball.”

As 12 year olds, the group won the Minnesota Sports Federation Class B division championship.

The next summer, the crew went on a 10-day trip that concluded with a game at Doubleday Field in Cooperstown, N.Y.

At the VFW baseball level, their team advanced to the state tournament.

And last year, their American Legion team finished as runner-up in the district tournament.

This season saw the Tigers finish 17-4 overall, clinching the West Central Conference title.

The Tigers lost five games because of the weather. When they were finally able to play, the Tigers played four games a week for three straight and played right up to the playoffs.

Torgerson was grateful for a second batting cage, brought over from Chokio-Alberta, that helped the team get prepared for the outdoor season.

“We took more indoor hitting than you can imagine,” he said. “Because of our facilities, we had the opportunity to get a lot more hitting.”

With a shortened season,  players didn’t get in enough games to pad their individual stats. Still, Picht hit over .400 again this season and was named the West Central Conference MVP.

Mac Beyer, Chandler Erickson, Tanner Picht, Tyler Henrichs, and Jacob Torgerson were named all-conference. Bryce Jergenson received an Honorable Mention from the West Central Conference.

Torgerson, Picht, and Henrichs were named to the All-Section 3AA team.

Torgerson was also named to the Academic All-State team.

Coach Torgerson credits his assistants for the Tigers’ success this season.

Jim Greenwaldt coached the  JV program to another successful season.

“It shows how solid he is as an assistant.”

Jim Kennedy coached the freshmen for the first time.

“They had a good year too.”

Don Goracke volunteered his service once again.

“It’s a big asset having him around.”

Kirby Marquart also stepped forward to assist this season.

“The kids related to him,” explained Torgerson. “He helped a lot. He’s really dedicated.”

Torgerson has had a lot of fun watching this group of athletes play baseball over the years.

“I would like to thank them and their parents for a wonderful time on the ball fields the past 11 years,” Torgerson said. “I hope they continue to play hard and enjoy the wonderful game of baseball.”
