Storm boys win one, lose one in holiday tournament

The Morris Benson Area boys lost the first game of the River Lakes Holiday Hockey Tournament to the host team Wednesday, but came back Thursday to defeat Fairmont for a spot in the consolation game.

River Lakes took advantage of a power-play opportunity to open the scoring in just under two minutes, but Mac Beyer answered with his own power-play goal less than two minutes later. Andrew Rentz had an assist on Beyer's goal.

The Stars took back the lead nine and a half minutes into the first period and never let the Storm back in. The host team added another goal late in the period for a 3-1 advantage.

After the break the Storm came out fighting with Corey Goff scoring early, but River Lakes added two more points in the second period for a 5-2 lead.

Tanner Picht scored off an assist from Brody Gimberlin to get the Storm within two goals early in the third period. The Stars quickly dashed hopes of a Storm comeback by scoring two in just nine seconds.

The Storm kept up the fight with Gimberlin scoring from Beyer with less than seven minutes remaining, but the Stars quickly answered with their final goal for an 8-4 victory.

The Storm outshot Fairmont 56-14 in a 9-2 victory Thursday.

Darion Helberg scored the first and final goals of the game, getting the Storm on the board with an unassisted goal in just over two minutes of play.

Two short-handed goals, the first by Brody Gimberlin and the second by Mac Beyer from Gimberlin, gave the Storm a 3-0 lead.

Riley Blake closed out the first-period scoring unassisted and started the second period with a goal on assists from Corey Goff and Chad Schwarz. Tanner Picht added another goal unassisted to give the Storm a 6-0 lead after two periods of play.

Mac Beyer's goal off of Picht's assist put the Storm up 7-0 only 35 second into the third period. Fairmont finally got on the board, but Taner Gimberlin answered with a Storm goal less than a minute later. Helberg's second goal was scored off assists from Tanner Mikkelson and Taner Gimberlin.

Fairmont added another goal for the final 9-2 score.

Austin Crow stopped 12 of the Cardinals' 14 shots. Colton Cunning was busy in the Fairmont net, stopping 47 shots on goal.
