MBA Storm lose opener to Willmar 10-7

BENSON -- The Willmar Cardinals topped the Morris Benson Area Storm 10-7 on Tuesday.

Actually, this was a season-opening boys hockey game with deuces wild.

Each team had an ace up their sleeve.

Hunter Schneider scored four goals for the winning team, plus assisting teammates on three others.

The Storm answered with Tanner Picht; he layed down a hat trick.

The stat sheet listed a combined 80 shots on net by the combatants. Levi Goosman made 29 saves in the Willmar cage; Austin Crow gobbled up 34 Cardinal shots at the opposite end.

Picht scored in the first minute to set the tone and Schneider answered two minutes in to announce the tone.

It was 3-all after one stanza before Willmar went on a six-goal rampage in the second period.

"They got guys that can score," observed Willmar coach Dan Tollefson. "Our first line of Schneider, [Ryan] Woltjer and [Zech] Streed were very effective and so was the powerplay."

Defensemen Buzzy Tollefson put in two goals for Willmar. Tanner Gimberlin, Andrew Rentz, Corey Storck and Riley Blake also notched goals for the Storm.
