Storm boys down conference champs

The Morris Benson Area Storm turned in their most complete effort of the season, snapping a 16-game winning streak for the Southwest Conference Champions Redwood Valley 3-1 Tuesday.

With the win the second place Storm improved to 7-4 in the conference and 9-11-1 overall and Redwood Valley fell to 10-2 in the conference and 17-3 overall.

The Cardinals controlled the game early, scoring just seven minutes into the game. The Storm dominated for the rest of the period, only to have Redwood Valley's goalie deny them time after time. The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Cardinals after the first period with Storm goalie Alex Sinclair making 13 saves.

The Storm held the Cardinals scoreless for the second and third periods, while out-shooting Redwood Valley 14-5. The effort finally paid off when Mac Beyer scored unassisted midway through the period to tie the score at 1-1.

Luke Schwarz gave the Storm their first lead just over five minutes into the final period when he knocked home a rebound of a Brady Valnes shot and it was 2-1. Ethan Ratliff-Crain also was credited with an assist on the goal.  The Cardinals stepped up their play in the final minutes, but the Storm defense of Jake Manska, Thomas Horecka, Jacob Huston, and Isaac Berens, along with Sinclair, kept them off of the board. Tyler Hansen added an empty-net goal with an assist from Tanner Picht with just three seconds remaining to seal the win. Sinclair came up with 11 third period saves for a game total of 29.
