Storm boys defeat Tigers in conference action

Morris Benson Area improved its Southwest Conference boys' hockey record to 5-1 with a 4-3 win over the Tigers Thursday in Marshall.

The Storm are now in second place in the conference behind Redwood Valley at 7-1. Their overall record stands at 6-8. Marshall falls to 5-3 in the conference.

Marshall got on the board first with a power-play goal. The Storm's Tanner Picht tied it up with a power-play goal of his own with assists from Kelly Engquist and Mac Beyer.

Alex Sinclair was in goal for the Storm and he responded with a very strong game, making seven first-period saves while the Tigers' goalie Andy Noble made three.

Tyler Hansen scored back-to-back goals for the Storm to start the second period, the first assisted by Picht and Beyer, and the second on a power-play assisted by Picht. Marshall added a goal before the period ended and the Storm went into the final period with a 3-2 lead.

There was plenty of action in the period as Sinclair was forced to make 16 saves and Noble 12.

Engquist gave the Storm a two-goal cushion when he tipped in a blast from the point off Jake Manska's stick with just over seven minutes remaining. Luke Schwarz got the second assist on the goal. It proved to be a huge insurance goal when the Tigers scored with 3:51 remaining.

Sinclair and the Storm held on, surviving a Marshall power-play advantage in the final minute. Sinclair came up big again, making five more saves for a game total of 28 while Noble made three for a total of 18.
