Storm boys can't hold lead

The Morris Benson Area boys shot out to a 3-0 first-period lead, but could not hold on as Redwood Valley came back for a 6-4 Southwest Conference win Tuesday night in Redwood Falls.

The defending champion Cardinals improved to 4-1 in the conference while the Storm fell to 2-1 and 3-7 overall.

Tyler Hansen got the Storm on the board first, scoring with an assist from Tanner Picht just 1:52 into the game. Defenseman Tristan Michealson then scored the first goal of his varsity career with another assist from Picht and Hansen scored assisted by Michealson just 14 seconds later and the Storm led 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the period.

That was the score at the period break as Storm goalie Alex Sinclair stopped all 12 shots that the Cardinals attempted and Redwood Valley's John Rebstock came up with nine saves.

The second period was a complete flip-flop of the first as Redwood Valley scored three times while holding the Storm off of the board. Eric Miller scored early in the period, scoring short-handed to get some momentum going and he added another goal soon after to bring Redwood Valley to within 3-2. Mike Welch added their third goal of the period to tie the game heading into the final stanza. Sinclair came up with 10 saves in the period while Rebstock made eight.

Picht regained the lead for the Storm with a goal assisted by Hansen just 1:30 into the final period, but the lead would not hold up as Redwood Valley scored the last three goals of the game to pull out the win. Mike Welch, John Welch, and Eric Hanson scored the goals for the Cardinals. Sinclair made 11 more saves in the period for a game total of 33 and Rebstock made six for a total of 23.

The Storm will be back on the ice Thursday at Pequot Lakes.
