Storm boys win Section matchup

The Morris Benson Area boys' varsity hockey team split a pair of road games to go 11-9-1 as the season wraps up.

After a disappointing 6-4 loss Friday in Marshall, the Storm picked up an important win in Wadena Tuesday to improve to 2-0 against Section 6A teams.

With the win the Storm secured the No. 6 seed for the upcoming section playoffs and will take on Sartell/St. Stephen at 7 p.m. in Sartell on Tuesday.

The winner of that game will advance to the semi-finals to be played on Saturday, Feb. 28 in St. Cloud.

Marshall 6

The Marshall Tigers scored three goals in just 18 seconds two and a half minutes into the second period and held on for a 6-4 win over the Storm on Friday, Feb. 13.

Penalties also aided the Tigers as they scored three times while having a man advantage.

The teams skated to a 1-1 tie in the opening period as Marshall picked up a power-play goal at the 8:53 mark, but the Storm tied the game on a Mike Morales goal at 10:45. Peter Lindblad and Sampsa Purojarvi assisted on the Morales goal.

MBA goalie Will Johnson had nine saves in the period and the Tigers' goalie had four. Three first-period penalties on the Storm kept most of the action in their zone during the period.

After the three-goal explosion in the opening minutes of the second period, the Storm settled down and the rest of the period was scoreless for a 4-1 Marshall lead after two.

Johnson had nine saves in the second period. Marshall had 10.

Tyler Hansen scored an unassisted goal at the 1:43 mark of the third period and suddenly the game was 4-2 and MBA had some momentum. Another penalty stemmed that momentum and then a controversial power-play goal by the Tigers, which led to another power play and the resulting goal on that man advantage, gave Marshall a 6-2 lead.

Morales scored again with an assist from Thomas Horecka at 11:35 and Lindblad scored with an assist from Morales at 13:52, but MBA ran out of time.

Johnson came up with five more saves in the period for a game total of 23, while the Marshall goalie had three and a game total of 17.

Wadena/DC 1

Tyler Hansen's power-play goal with 4:45 remaining in the game and Will Johnson's 27 saves led the Storm to an exciting 2-1 win over Wadena/Deer Creek on Tuesday in Wadena.

The teams played to a scoreless tie after the first period in a hard-hitting, physical contest. Storm defensemen Dustin Sauter, Juho Luhtakanta, Jake Manska, Thomas Horecka, and Tristan Michealson helped Johnson hold the Wolverines off of the scoreboard as he stopped all nine shots that he saw in the period. The Wolverine goalie, Tyler Muehler, made four saves.

It looked as though the second period might be scoreless as well, but the Wolverines were able to convert on a power-play with just 45 seconds remaining when Joey Osborn scored with assists going to Dylan Carlisle and Brandon Wing. Each goalie made six saves in the second period.

Peter Lindblad tied the score at 1-1 when he scored an unassisted goal on a short-handed breakaway at the 11:21 mark of the third period. He then drew a penalty on another breakaway at the 5:51 mark to set up the winning goal for the Storm. Sauter passed the puck to Brady Valnes behind the Wolverine net and Valnes threaded a perfect pass to Hansen who beat Muehler with a one timer with 54 seconds left in the man advantage to give the Storm the 2-1 lead.  Wadena applied good pressure for the remainder of the game as they tried to tie the score, but Johnson and the rest of the Storm held them off to complete the win. An MBA penalty with just 1:04 remaining in the game gave Wolverines a 6-on-4 advantage as they pulled their goalie after the penalty, but they could not get the tying goal. Johnson came up with 12 saves in the period and Muehler made five.
