Storm falls to No. 1 Luverne

Lincoln Pahl in action against Luverne in second round Section 3A boys hockey playoff action on Friday, Feb. 21.

The Morris Benson Area Storm scored two goals on No. 1 seeded Luverne in the second round of Section 3A playoff action Friday, Feb. 21 in Luverne. That wasn’t enough as Luverne put 13 pucks past freshman goalie Tony Bruns for the 13-2 victory to make it to the semis on Saturday.

Out of all the teams, Luverne has played this entire season, the Storm has been the only team to put four pucks past their leading goalie junior Connor Crabtree, which is probably a good reason they switched it up last Friday night and put in senior Kendell Meyer in for the playoff game against the Storm, just in case that were to happen again. Unfortunately, both Luverne goalies held save percentages above 90 percent for the regular season, so whoever was between the pipes, the Storm was bound to have a tough time getting anything past them. That they did, getting off 18 total shots on net compared to Luvernes 62 shots. On the plus, Bruns made 49 saves in the losing effort.

Luverne started scoring early and often, putting in four goals in the opening five minutes of the first period. Luverne tacked on a fifth goalie before the Storm got on the board with a goal by Taner Gimberlin in under 30 seconds left in the period, sending the Storm into the locker room trailing 5-1.

The first half six minutes of the second period was quiet, except for a few minor penalties and another goal by Luverne. Over the next five minutes beyond the 6:40 mark, Luverne scored another four goals, increasing their lead 10-2. Tanner Mikkelson found the net for the Storm for the second goal with assist to Bo Olson at 9:55 in the second. Luverne added two more late in the second to go into the second intermission ahead by 10 at 12-2.

Out of intermission and now on running time, the third period was quiet. Luverne scored the only goal of the period early to ice out the Storm 13-2.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, No. 1 seeded Luverne shutout No. 4 seeded Hutchinson 4-0 to make it to the Section 3A championship round where they play No. 3 seeded New Ulm on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Gustavus.
