The Morris Benson Area boys hockey team took on the Bearcats of Kittson Central in Morris on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The Storm trailed 2-0 after the first period, showing some hope for a close game. That wasn’t the case as the Bearcats went on a scoring spree, adding six in the second alone, and getting the win 9-3 over the Storm.

Nick Kasprowicz and Anders Lindegard led the Bearcats in victory. Kasprowicz had five points in the game, two goals and three assists. Lindegard contributed two goals and two assists with the win.

The Bearcats spent nearly a half hour in the penalty box, but the Storm converted just two of their nine power play opportunities into scores. The Storm penalty kill still proved to be a weak link as the Bearcats took advantage of the Storm being a player down four out of their nine chances.

Kittson had a 12-8 shot advantage in the first, scoring a power play goal and a short handed goal to put the Bearcats up 2-0 going into the first intermission.

The Storm found the net twice on half as many shots as Kittson had in the second, but the Bearcats had the upper hand since six of their sixteen shots went in. The Bearcats added three other power play goals, putting the Bearcats up 8-0 at one point in the second period. The Storm then got on the board with a power play goal of their own. Matt Hoffman found the open net on the right side after a pass in front by Lincoln Pahl at 14:10. Kevin Meixel also got credit for the assist on the Hoffman goal. Less than 30 seconds later, Taner Gimberlin got a questionable goal when he snuck one by the goalie from behind the net. The referee called it a goal, so Hoffman was credited with the assist, closing the Bearcat lead to six.

Kittson added a ninth goal in the third, putting the Bearcats up 9-2, before Cole Watzke scored a power play goal at 12:18 for the final goal of the game. The third period saw a 10-minute misconduct call on Kittson, nearing the end of the game, but it was too late for the Storm to exploit it as the Bearcats went on to victory over the Storm 9-3.

The Storm will now participate in the Minnehaha Academy tournament in Minnehaha on Thursday, Dec. 26 and Friday, Dec. 27.
