Tigers send 2 to finals at Big Bear

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team traveled to Cass Lake for the two-day Big Bear wrestling tournament. This is one of the biggest tournaments in the state with 32 teams participating. The Tigers finished 14th with a team score of 88.5 points.

Badger/Greenbush-Middle River won the tournament with 204.5 points. The Tigers had only three place winners, but the competition is very stiff with state champions in a number of finals. Seniors Tim Ostby at 152 pounds and Zach Gibson at 285 both finished second. Junior Joel Harrison at 220 finished seventh.

Tim Ostby's trip to the finals at 152 pounds started with a fall over Wyatt Nordskog of Fosston/Bagley in 2:47. In the next round, he pinned Cameron Landeen of Red Lake County Central in only 31 seconds. In the quarter finals he defeated Devin Wicks of Walker 9-5. In the semi-finals, he had an 11-4 decision over Holden Nelson of Thief River Falls. Ostby lost to Jordan Chouanard of Aitkin 4-1 in the championship match.

Zach Gibson started his trip to the finals at 285 pounds with a pin in 1:28 over Taylor Tenner of Fergus Falls. In the next round, he pinned David Erickson of Thief River Falls in 2:44. In the quarter finals, he pinned Skyler Huckbody of Walker in only 39 seconds. His semi-finals win was a pin in 3:24 over Josh Albright of Fosston/Bagley. This set up a showdown the Tiger coaches were looking for with No. 1 ranked and defending State Class A Champion Alex Yeager of Badger/Greenbush-Middle River. The match started on a good note when Gibson took Yeager down and led 2-0, but Yeager escaped and in the second period proved to be too much. Yeager pinned Gibson to claim the title.

The Tigers' other place winner was a seventh-place finish by junior Joel Harrison. Harrison defeated Eli Gravelle of Red Lake County Central 9-7 in overtime in the opening round. He then pinned Zack Filk of Hutchinson in 5:12. In the quarter finals, Joel lost 4-0 to the eventual champion Matt Pepper of United Clay Becker. In wrestle backs, he defeated Abram Aho of Fergus Falls with a pin in 4:59. He then lost to Jon Erickson of Thief River Falls 2-1 in overtime. In the seventh place match, Harrison defeated Ethan Supler of West Central Area 5-3.
