Football: Pirates slap Hancock with second loss
The Verndale Pirates improved to 6-0 on the season as they handed Hancock a 40-21 loss Friday, Oct. 5, in Hancock. The Owls fell to 4-2 on the season.
After being down 20-0, the Owls used the final two minutes of the first half to put points on the board. On a drive that started on their own 38-yard-line, it ended with a one yard run by Gideon Joos with 17 seconds left in the half. A Sergi Sebastia kick trimmed the deficit to 20-7 at the half.
Verndale held Hancock without a first down in the second half until just under 10 minutes in the fourth quarter. That first first down in the second half led to points as the Owls capped off a nine-play 71 yard drive with a touchdown. Preston Rohloff hit Cole Reese on a five yard pass in the end zone. With a blocked point after, the Owls were trailing 34-13 at hte 8:26 mark in the fourth.
The Owls got their third score of the game with just under three minutes left in the fourth. Bennett Nienhaus ended a drive that started from the Owl 28 with a nine-yard run to the end zone. Nienhaus also had the two point conversion to trim the deficit to the final score, 40-21.
The Owls close out the home season against CGB, who beat Rothsay Friday night, next Friday, Oct. 12, in Hancock.
