Northwestern 57

On Friday at the P. E. Center, the Cougars defeated Northwestern 77-57.

Fueled by sharp-shooting behind the arc and a double-double from Steph Roggenbuck, the Cougars started strong and never looked back.

Roggenbuck scored 21, from inside and out, and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds as well. Guards Tara Thielke and Nikki Washek also lit up from downtown, going a collective 7-for-12 on threes, and finishing with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Guard Brandi Cresap had a quietly effective night with six points, six assists and no turnovers.

From tipoff, the Cougars jumped in front with the help of three-pointers from Thielke, Jenni Noordmans, and Emily Mehr, to lead 9-0 at the 17:19 mark. A second three from Noordmans at the midway point stretched the UMM lead to 23-9.

Meanwhile on defense, the Cougars frustrated the Eagles with excellent weak side help and by focusing on keeping Northwestern scorers Katie DeWitt and Ariel Liesch in check. Though DeWitt had 20 points, UMM managed to prevent Northwestern from establishing any serious runs in the second half.

Senior Nikki Washek led all scorers with 17 points, going 3-of-4 on three-pointers. Kelsey Erickson turned in a double-double (13 and 10) to go along with four assists and four steals.

UMM held a 56-20 rebounding advantage. Every Cougar had minutes on the court.
