Cougar women fall in opener

It was windy on the field Tuesday afternoon, but the Gusties from Gustavus Adolphus proved even stronger as they dealt the University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team a 5-0 loss in the season opener.

With five points between them, Meghan McMillan and Rachel Iblings paced the Gusties who started a lineup with eight starters back from a team that placed fourth in the MIAC last season.

The game was evenly matched for the majority of the first half as they played scoreless until the 37th minute. The Cougars remained unfazed until just seconds before halftime when the Gusties scored again, taking a 2-0 lead into the break.

The Cougars goalkeeper, Emily Jacob, played under pressure much of the second half, and rose to the occasion, recording 13 saves for the match. Bre Cross, Nina Jarnot and Amber O'Connor provided offensive pressure up front, but ultimately the Cougars were outshot 35-4 for the game.

The Cougars hit the road Saturday for Mt. Marty. Their next home contest will be Tuesday, September 8 under the lights (7 p.m.) at Big Cat Stadium when they host St. Benedict's.
