Cougar softball picked 4th in UMAC coaches' poll
The University of Minnesota, Morris softball team was picked fourth in the 2008 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference pre-season coaches' poll.
St. Scholastica, who has won the past nine UMAC titles, was again tabbed as the number one team. Northland College was second and Northwestern College third.
UMM was 7-20 overall in 2007 and fifth in the UMAC with a 6-8 record. The Cougars return two of their top four hitters from a year ago.
Sophomore catcher Julie Rohling (Howard Lake) was second on the team in hitting last year at 452. Sophomore Stephanie Wilson (Detroit Lakes) was fourth in hitting at .321.
Wilson, along with junior Emilie Kalvig (Blackduck), are back to handle the pitching duties for head coach Heather Pennie in 2008.
Wilson was 1-1 with a 3.50 era. Kalvig was 4-9 with a 5.23 era.
The Cougars home opener is scheduled for March 27 against Ridgewater College.
UMAC conference play begins on March 31 when UMM travels to Aberdeen to take on Presentation College.
