Offensive outburst not enough for UMM

UMM Sports Information

In a rare Monday afternoon game, the Minnesota Morris Cougars (12-10) fell 19-9 to Carleton in Northfield. Morris hit two home runs in the game, one each by Jake Schmitz and Cody Reinke. The Cougars scored nine runs on seven hits on the afternoon.

The Carleton Knights took the lead early, scoring a run in the bottom of the second. The Cougars couldn't muster much offense in the first few innings but broke through in the top of the third.

The inning started with a Ryan Wynn walk and he was sacrificed to second by Chandler Erickson. Eric Terres walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Schmitz stepped in the box and crushed a ball over the fence in left center putting Morris up 3-1. It was the first homerun for Schmitz in his career with the Cougars.

The lead did not last long as the Knights rallied back to score four runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 5-3 lead. Carleton kept pushing and scored six runs, taking an 11-3 lead.

Wynn and Erickson started the top of the fifth with back-to-back singles. After a flyout, Schmitz came to the plate and delivered a single to plate Wynn. Cody Reinke followed with an RBI groundout giving UMM their fifth run of the game.

Once again Carleton's offense struck again, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth and took a 14-5 lead. The Cougars did their best to make the game close, scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. Cody Reinke had a big three run bomb to left center, cutting the Knights lead to five at 14-9.

Carleton put the contest away in the bottom of the seventh, countering the Cougars big inning with a five run inning of their own. The game ended there with the Knights winning 19-9 via the 10 run rule. Both Reinke and Schmitz had four RBI in the game.
