Cougars win in ten

After several hours of delay the University of Minnesota, Morris Cougars and Northland College Lumberjacks were able to get on the field around 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 30, kicking off the UMAC season. Minnesota Morris picked up the 4-3 victory in ten innings, thanks to a walk off single by Chandler Erickson. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed to a later date.

Despite not getting the decision, freshman Joey Hyde pitched seven strong innings allowing just two earned runs while throwing 125 pitches. Devin Waldvogel threw the other three innings and picked up the win. Northland starter Kyle Strom went 9.2 innings and threw 140 pitches on the day.

Morris struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Jake Schmitz was hit a by a pitch and stole second to get into scoring position with one out. Kylan Hill delivered a two out single to right, scoring Schmitz from third.

Northland tied the ballgame up in the third inning, but the Cougars got one back in the bottom half of the inning. Eric Terres reached on a fielder's choice and stole second to move into scoring position. He scored on a single to right by Cody Reinke.

The Lumberjacks knotted the game at two in the top of the fifth, but once again the Cougars responded right back. Terres led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a sac fly from Reinke. Morris tried to score on another sac fly moment later but was thrown out at home to end the inning.

In the top of the eighth, an unearned run allowed the Lumberjacks to tie the game at three. They had an opportunity to take the lead, loading the bases with one out but a double play ended the inning with game tied at three.

The Cougars looked like they would threaten in the bottom of the ninth, thanks to a two out double by Donnie Mavencamp, but he missed first and was called out on an appeal. Northland was unable to do much in the top of the tenth inning, going down quietly.

In the bottom of the tenth, Terres drew a leadoff walk to start a rally. He advanced to second on a sac bunt by Schmitz. After a fly out and intentional walk, Erickson came to the plate and singled home Terres, giving the Cougars a 4-3 win.
