UMM Sports Information
The Minnesota Morris Cougars softball (3-3) did all their scoring in the first inning on Tuesday, but finished with a pair of victories. Morris beat Rockford 2-1 before beating Saint Mary's 1-0, to complete the daily sweep.
Sam Hanson stepped to the plate in the top of the first with runners on second and third and one out. She delivered a double to right center scoring Kristy Hoge and Gina Downie. The Cougars did not pick up another hit the rest of the game but Hanson went to work in the circle, making sure her RBI double held up.
Hanson did not allow a base runner until the third inning and did not give up a hit until two outs in the bottom of the fourth. She stranded two runners in the inning to keep Rockford off the scoreboard.
In the bottom of the fifth she gave up back-to-back one out singles but again stranded two runners, picking up a pair of fly ball outs. Rockford rallied for a run in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of an error, but left a pair of runners on base.
Kelsey Fisher relieved Hanson in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a one out single to pick up her first career save, giving the Cougars the victory.
Against Saint Mary's, Minnesota Morris jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first thanks to a double from Molly Olson, scoring Alex Anderson. Anderson had reached on a one out walk. Saint Mary's threatened in the bottom of the third with runners on second and third but failed to score.
Saint Mary's also had a runner on third in the bottom of the sixth but Weatherly was able to keep them off the board in the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, SMC rallied to put runners on first and second. Weatherly forced her 12th fly ball out of the game to pick up the complete game shutout.
Morris will now enjoy an off day before facing Wentworth College and Saint Joseph's on Thursday afternoon.
