Cougar men open UMAC action with 1-0 win
The University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer team opened conference play with a 1-0 victory Friday at Crown College.
After a scoreless first half, the Cougars' Toby Glaser put Morris on the board with an unassisted tally at the 59:19 mark. Glaser led the Cougars in scoring last season with nine goals, but gets his first this year in the season's sixth game.
Morris was dominant on the offensive end all night, setting the tone early with 13 shots in the first half compared to just four from Crown. Despite the offensive output, though, the Cougar offense was held off the board in the first half.
Storm goalkeeper Chris Scanlon finished the game with five saves, compared to just four by Cougar keeper Tyler Weber.
In the second, the Cougar shot attempts came back down to eight, but they got the big one along the way.
Fifteen minutes into the half, Glaser made good on one of his game-high seven shots, capitalizing on back-to-back fouls by the storm.
Glaser now joins Michael Ward and Greg Borchers as the only Cougars to score this season, while net-minder Weber claims his third shutout in six games on the season.
For the game, the Cougar offense fired off a season-high 21 shots, while the defense held the storm to just nine, also the Cougars' best mark of the season
