Basketball: Tigers' Torgerson gets win No. 500
Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta head coach Mark Torgerson earned his 500th career coaching win as the Tigers routed West Central Area, 77-70, Thursday, Jan. 11 in Barrett. It was the Tigers' third straight win.
After racing out to a 21-point lead midway through the first half, the Tigers held a 17-point lead at the break at 48-31 then held off a late comeback effort by the Knights to win 77-70.
The Tigers shot a "blistering" 76 percent in the first half, Torgerson said. Another positive in the first half was the Tigers' nine three-pointers, an area the Tigers have struggled with so far this season, Torgerson said.
Four Tigers were in double figures by halftime led by Tate Nelson's 12 points. Camden Arndt also had 12 in the half and finished with that total, Connor Koebernick had 11 in the half and Jaret Johnson added 10.
The Tigers withstood a second half comeback by the Knights, who trimmed the deficit to five points in the final minute. The Tigers were able to knock down some clutch free throws to seal their fifth win of the season.
"Kyle Staebler continues to provide a spark off the bench with six rebounds and hustle, playing all over the floor," Torgerson said.
Johnson also grabbed six boards to go with his game high 21 points. Nelson finished the game with 19, Koebernick added 16.
The Tigers travel to Pelican Rapids Saturday, Jan. 13 for a non-conference game.
