Baseball: Three Cougars named all-conference
One outfielder and two pitchers represent Minnesota Morris on the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) All-Conference Baseball team announced Tuesday, May 15 by the conference.
Senior outfielder Jackson Gessell earned his second First Team All-UMAC nod and third all-conference selection in all. Gessell hit over .300 in all four seasons in a Cougar uniform culminating with a .305 average in 2018. He led the Cougars in hits (39), doubles (14), triples (4), and tied for the team lead in RBIs (14). He set a program record for career triples this season with 18.
Making their first appearance on the all-conference team are junior Thomas Eckstein and sophomore Michael Head. Eckstein did a little bit of everything for the Cougars in 2018. He led the team with a .343 batting average and .529 slugging percentage. Ten of his 24 hits went for extra bases (8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run). He also made nine appearances on the mound, starting two, recorded a 2-0 record, tossed one complete game, and recorded one save. Head led the squad with three wins. In conference contests, he recorded a 2.51 earned run average while allowing just a .222 opponents' batting average. He tossed one complete game and recorded a save.
