The Morris Eagles won the opening round of the Region 9C Playoffs with a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Dumont.

Morris got on the board first in the first inning with an RBI groundout by Matthew Carrington scoring Tanner Picht.

Dumont scored two in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The Eagles regained the lead in the third. Kirby Marquart singled and Ryan Beyer reached on an error. The runners took off and Marquart scored as the ball rolled away from the third baseman to tie the game. Carrington lined a drive to center to score Beyer from the third for a sacrifice fly and a 3-2 lead.

Draftee from Montevideo Colton Vien was pitching well, but ran into a little trouble in the top of the sixth. A couple of one-out walks came back to haunt as back-to-back twp-out singles allowed two runs to score for a 4-3 deficit. The second run was unearned as an error had allowed a runner to go to third, who then scored on an infield single.

Vien settled down retiring the final nine straight Dumont hitters setting up the dramatic bottom of the ninth.

Jamie VanKempen led off the ninth with a walk. The left handed hitting Tanner Picht then ripped a shot to the opposite field to left that hit half way up the wall (the left field fence is about 15 feet high in Rosen) for a double and put runners at second and third and nobody out. Marquart was intentionally walked to load the bases. Ryan Beyer then drew an unintentional walk to tie the game. Eric Asche then drilled a deep fly ball to center, plenty deep to plate the winning run,

Picht and Marquart were the only two Eagles with two hits and Carrington finished with two RBI.

Vien got the win on the mound, giving up six hits, four runs, two earned, walking three and striking out three in the complete game victory.

Clinton defeated Dawson 3-0 in the first game of the day and Madison beat Appleton 6-5 in 12 innings in the final game of the day.

The Morris Eagles won their fourth straight game 7-2 over the Clinton Cards and earned a spot in the Region 9C play-in game.

The Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the second inning, but slowly took control of the game. A clutch two-out RBI single in the third inning by Kirby Marquart plated Tanner Picht who had walked and stole second. Picht filled in at the leadoff spot over the weekend for Dusty Sauter who had suffered a concussion and broken nose in a collision at third base last weekend in the Appleton game.

Another run was scored in the fourth after back-to-back singles, one-out singles by Craig Knochenmus and Matthew Carrington. Brett Anderson ripped a shot down the left field line scoring Knochenmus and would have scored Carrington, but rolled under the fence in the left field corner for a ground rule double and Carrington had to stay at third. The rally fizzled, but the Eagles, with the score now tied at 2-2, were not done.

Picht led off the fifth with a single and Marquart sacrificed him to second. One out later, the veteran Eric Asche drilled a two-run home run to deep left center to give the Eagles a two-run lead.

Another run scored on an error in the sixth. Ryan Beyer laced an RBI double in the seventh past a diving left fielder and Knochenmus scored him one batter later with a single. Jacob Torgerson was in control on the mound and threw six strong innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, one walk, and two strikeouts.

Craig Knochenmus came on in the seventh and was dominant in finishing the game. He allowed three hits, a walk and struck out six over the final three innings for the save. Madison defeated Dawson 4-1 in the second game of the day and will face the Eagles Saturday in Ortonville with a state tournament bid on the line. Appleton eliminated Dumont 5-3 in the loser's bracket in the final game of the day.
