Smith nominated for Hengstler-Ranweiler Award

Morris Area's MaKenzie Smith has been named a nominee for the 53rd Annual West Central Tribune Hengstler-Ranweiler Award.

In basketball, Smith proved versatile enough to play both in the post and at guard. A two-year starter and letterwinner, as well as all-conference selection, she averaged 8.6 points, 2 assists, and 6.2 rebounds in her career. She finished with 449 points, 323 rebounds, 93 assists, 111 steals, and 87 blocks. “A strong weapon on defense,” said coach Dale Henrich.

In cross country, Smith has been a stellar performer for six years, winning conference championships as a junior and senior. She placed fourth in sections as a junior and second as a senior, twice competing in the state meet, placing 31st last fall. “She leaves the team in good hands because of how she led the younger girls,” Henrich said.

In track and field, Smith competed in six events for the Tigers (800, 1600, 3200, 4X400, 4X800, and discus.) As a junior, she placed first in the conference and second in the section in the 3200, second in both in the 1600, and she placed 11th in the state in the 1600 and 13th in the 3200 last spring.

The Hengstler-Ranweiler Awards are presented annually to the area's outstanding male and female high school athletes. The award is named after Herb Hengstler and Lefty Ranweiler, two longtime sports editors at the West Central Tribune in Willmar. There are 43 nominees this year and winners will be announced June 11.
