Metzger nominated for Hengstler-Ranweiler Award

Morris Area's Connor Metzger has been named a nominee for the 53rd Annual West Central Tribune Hengstler-Ranweiler Award.

As a wrestler, Metzger earned four letters as front-line 170-pounder and was twice named all-conference. He was 31-8 with 19 pins this winter and finished with a career mark of 82-50. He placed fifth in the state tournament, was second and third in the section, and finished second in the conference.

Metzger was a six-year letter winner in track and field while the Tigers won sub-section title five times, sections three times, and the conference once. He helped lead the team to two True-team section championships and two second-place finishes at state. He has a personal-best in the pole vault of 12-6, 54.3 in the 400, and 3:35.0 in the 4X400.

In football Metzger won three letters and was an all-conference player in his one year as a starter at fullback and linebacker. He ran for 136 career yards and left his largest mark on defense, making 55 solo stops with 113 assists, six sacks, and four fumble recoveries

The Hengstler-Ranweiler Awards are presented annually to the area's outstanding male and female high school athletes. The award is named after Herb Hengstler and Lefty Ranweiler, two longtime sports editors at the West Central Tribune in Willmar. There are 43 nominees this year and winners will be announced June 11.
