Tiger boys win sixth straight in Ortonville

The Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta boys' basketball team won its sixth straight game 57-39 in a non-conference battle with Ortonville Saturday.

The win improved the Tigers' record to 11-2 on the season just past the half-way point of their 2012-2013 campaign.

"It wasn't the prettiest of basketball games, but the Tiger defense once again was strong in leading them to their sixth straight win," explained coach Mark Torgerson. "The Tigers won the game despite only going 1-for-9 from behind the three-point line and shooting only 37 percent for the game.

"In addition, despite getting to the free-throw line a season-high 33 times, the Tigers made only 16 of their attempts," added Torgerson. "But, again, because of their defensive performance it came as a pretty comfortable win.

"The game was tight early and Ortonville had the lead at 13-12 midway through the first half, but the Tigers only allowed four points the rest of the half and found enough offense to enjoy a 26-17 lead at the break."

Logan Manska collected 10 of his game-high 14 points in the opening half, while Tiger post Austin Dierks added eight more to lead the Tigers.

"Nic Vipond continued his fine play off the bench with five points, as well.

"The second half saw the Tiger lead stay at about the 10-point range as neither team found their shooting touch," Torgerson said. "Midway through the half, however, the Tiger offense stretched the lead against the Trojans on their home court. Leading by 20 points with two minutes to play, the Tiger bench got to see some action and finished the game in fine fashion."

The Tigers committed only nine turnovers for the game, while Ortonville committed 17 miscues.

The Tigers outrebounded the Trojans by a 43-33 margin. Dierks led the Tigers with 10 rebounds while Lincoln Berget and Vipond each had seven rebounds.

Jacob Torgerson and Logan Manska each had four assists to lead that category.

The Tigers finished with three in double figures with Dierks, Manska and Vipond scoring 14, 13, and 10, respectively.

Ortonville was led by James Nix and Jade Hasslen with eight points apiece. The Trojans shot just 34 percent for the game.

The Tigers return to conference action on Tuesday with a clash at home with Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City. The Falcons are in first place in the south half of the West Central Conference.
