Cougar women take sole possession of 1st

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference on Friday with a 76-48 win over Northwestern. 

Emily Mehr had a season-high 33 points to lead all scorers. Kendra Wycoff added 17 and Kayla Kramer had 11.

The Cougars shot 47.5 percent from the field in the game, including 53.1 percent in the first half. Morris outscored the Eagles 17-14 in the paint and caused 27 turnovers which led to 28 points for the home team.

It was tight in the opening three minutes of action, but then the Cougars took control and sailed through the first half. Leading 9-5 the Cougars went on a 25-5 run over the next 13 minutes of play to take a 36-10 lead. The lead got as large as 28 in the first half as the Cougars took a 45-17 lead into the break.

In the first half Mehr had 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-3 from beyond the three-point line. Wycoff was 4-of-6 in the first half from three-point range on the way to 14 first-half points.

The defense held the Eagles to just 30.4 percent shooting in the first half, including just 1-of-6 from behind the arc.

  The lead got as large as 31 in the second half as Mehr hit a three pointer on the Cougars' first possession. Northwestern was unable to get any closer than 22 as the Cougars cruised to the 76-48 win
