Tigers pick up two wins at home triangular

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team picked up two major conference wins Thursday in a home triangular.  The Tigers defeated Montevideo in the first match 37-30 and then finished the night with a 47-19 win over Benson.

  The Montevideo match started with a fall by Matt Munsterman over Christian Kanten at 106 pounds, but Montevideo then took the offensive with four straight wins.  Matt Henricksen defeated Mictchell Ascheman 14-9 at 113 pounds.  Bailey Eickhoff then defeated Travis Ostby 11-5 at 120 pounds and Spencer Sulflow defeated Evan Nelson 10-0 at 126 pounds.  Finally, Logan Knoshal pinned Jonny Morehouse in 3:40 at 132 pounds. 

Dillan Johnson gave the Tigers a break in the Montevideo attack with a major decision over Joe Schomaker 10-0 at 138 pounds, but then the Thunder Hawks took two more matches.  Mitch Kwilinski defeated Myles Smith 3-2 at 145 pounds and Anthony Quigley pinned Trent Ostby in 3:14 at 152 pounds.

The Thunder Hawks then ran out of wrestlers going into the upper weight classes losing five of the next six matches, four by forfeits.  Seth Nelson defeated Justin Welling 8-2 at 160 pounds followed by Aaron Nelson winning by forfeit at 170 pounds.  Connor Metzger then received a forfeit at 182 pounds and Alec Gausman lost by a pin to Jordan Flinn at 195 pounds in 1:36.  Joel Harrison received a forfeit at 220 pounds and Jacob Sperr received a forfeit at 285 pounds.

In the final match of the night, the Tigers received only one forfeit, but picked up eight wins.  Matt Munsterman received the forfeit at 106 pounds to start things out. 

Mitchell Ascheman then pinned Ethan Lagge in 5:05 at 113 pounds and Travis Ostby pinned Lane Geyer in 46 seconds at 120 pounds.  Evan Nelson continued the winning ways with a pin over Aaron Zosel in 3:36 at 126 pounds. 

The heart of Benson's team then took over for a while with five straight wins.  Grant Ascheman pinned Jonny Morehouse in 5:25 at 132 pounds,  Ben Lundebrek defeated Dillan Johnson 4-3 at 138 pounds, Bryce Goff defeated Myles Smith 7-3 at 145 pounds, Mitchell Koosman won by major decision over Trent Ostby 10-2 at 152 pounds, and Cody Hammerschmidt defeated Seth Nelson 6-2 at 160 pounds. 

  This brought the score to 24-19 Tigers, but that was as close as Benson would get.  The Tigers won the last five matches to claim the win.  Connor Metzger started the run with a pin in 1:55 over Matthew Wieber at 170 pounds.  Aaron Nelson then won by tech fall 16-1 over Trevor Berreau at 182 pounds. Alec Gausman pinned Kyle Wrobleski in 2:31 at 195 pounds and Jacob Sperr defeated Dakota Watkins 7-0 at 220 pounds. 

The last match of the night was the most anticipated.  Joel Harrison bumped up to the 285 pounds weight class to take on state-ranked Tyler Jensen.  Harrison pulled out an exciting 4-3 win. 

  Next up for the Tigers will be the conference tournament next Saturday at Minnewaska high school.
