Tigers open team competition with split at Paynesville Triangular

The Morris Area/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta wrestling team traveled to Paynesville to open team competition for the 2012-2013 season on Friday.  The Tigers split in the triangular, losing a one-point match to Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley 39-38 and then defeating host Paynesville 38-32 in the second match.

"The goal for the year as a team is to make it into the championship of the section and a trip to the state tournament," said assistant coach Blaine Hills  "One of the teams that the Tigers need to go through is United.  The Tigers wrestled hard, but came up short and missed a great opportunity."

D-B/LQPV jumped out to an early 15-0 lead picking up two pins and a decision in the first three matches, but the Tigers fought back.  Travis Ostby got things started with a fall in :59 at 126 pounds.  Then Evan Nelson gained a 18-3 tech fall at 132 pounds.  Dillan Johnson then put the Tigers in the lead 17-15 with a fall in :50 at 138 pounds.  Trent Osbty followed with a fall in 1:39 at 145 pounds and then Myles Smith won a 9-2 decision at 152 pounds bringing the score to 26-15.

After D-B/LQPV picked up a fall in :49 at 160 pounds, then a loss by fall to Connor Metzger in :55, they rattled off three straight pins to seal the match.  Joel Harrison picked up a forfeit at 285 pounds, but the match was over.  The Tigers lost 39-38.

The Tigers were more successful in the second match scoring a 38-33 win with a fall in the final match.  Eighth grader Jared Rohloff got the Tigers started with a 5-1 decision at 106 pounds.  Matt Munsterman then lost a tough 7-6 decision at 113 pounds, but Mitchell Ascheman got the Tigers back scoring with a :36 fall at 120 pounds.  The Tigers' tough middle lineup took charge scoring four more wins.  Travis Ostby scored a fall in 2:29 at 126 pounds and Evan Nelson notched another 15-0 tech fall at 132 pounds.  Dillan Johnson won a hard fought 3-0 decision at 138 pounds and Myles Smith won his own tough decision 6-5 at 145 pounds.  The Tigers were ahead 26-3.

Paynesville answered by winning five of the next six matches and sending the decision to the final bout.  The only Tiger to win was Connor Metzger with a fall in 2:53 at 182 pounds.  In the final bout, senior Joel Harrison bumped up to the 285-pound class.  After a scoreless first period, he gained a reversal in the second period and then turned his opponent over for a fall with one second left in the second period.  The Tigers won 38-33.
