Cougar women start season with win at Concordia

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's basketball team   started the season off on the right foot by picking up a 59-56 win over Concordia Moorhead Thursday, Nov. 15.

Kendra Wycoff led the way with 25 points, tying a career high. Abby Fragodt had a career-high 15 rebounds, including 13 on the defensive side.

Emily Mehr had 11 points and Emily Auch had 10 points off the bench as the other Cougar scorers in double digits. Kelsey Erickson had eight points and seven rebounds.

Concordia Moorhead was led by Tricia Sorensen who had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Alley Fisher had 15 points and Alexandra Lippert had 10 points for the Cobbers.

The Cobbers jumped out 12-7 early in the first half, but the Cougars were able to come back and tie it up at 12-12 and took a 14-12 lead eight minutes into the game. Wycoff hit a three with 7:23 left making it 19-15 in favor of the Cougars. Concordia took the lead back with under four minutes, 23-22. The Cobbers extended their lead to 27-22 before Erickson hit a free throw with over a minute left making it 27-23 going into halftime.

In the second half Wycoff scored a pair of layups tying the game up at 27 with 18:22 left. The Cobbers took the lead back right away and held the lead until Fragodt hit a jumper with 13:27 left giving UMM a 33-32 lead. Concordia went back up by five two minutes later and led by five with 10 minutes left.

Mehr scored on a driving layup and then Wycoff hit one of her three three pointers to tie the ball game. Wycoff converted a free throw to continue the UMM scoring drive which gave the Cougars a 50-44 lead. The Cougars went on an 11-0 scoring run for a 50-44 lead. The Cobbers pulled within one at 50-49, but the Cougars were able to keep the lead. Concordia hit a layup as time expired as the Cougars held on for the 59-56 win
