Cougars come out on top with 35-28 win

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota, Morris Cougars grinded out a 35-28 victory over the Presentation Saints Saturday.

The first half proved to be a battle for the Cougars. The Saints marched down the field on the opening drive for a touchdown that took 8 minutes off the clock to go up seven.

The Cougars answered quickly when Leandro Dower showed off his speed with a 70-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

Touchdown catches from both Brendon Foss and Danny Kernan followed soon after. Foss scored on a 44-yard strike from Garrigan on the first play after recovering a fumble to put UMM up 14-7.

Kernan's 14-yard strike a minute and 39 seconds later put UMM up 21-7 after the first quarter. UMM scored 21 points in a matter of just three minutes and 40 seconds to take the 14-point lead.

The Cougars stalled in the second quarter, and Presentation took advantage. The Saints put up 14 points of their own as they methodically marched down the field for their scores making it a 21-21 ball game going into half. 

The second half resembled the first with both teams scoring early. After another Brendon Foss touchdown catch put the Cougars up 28-21 to start the half, Presentation answered right back making the score 28-28 going into the fourth.

In the fourth quarter the Cougars got the upper hand and scored on a Dower touchdown putting UMM up 35-28 for the final score. The final scoring drive for the Cougars west 11 plays, 80 yards and ate up 5:07 off the clock.

The Saints were stopped on a fourth and two on the Cougars' 31 and were unable to get the ball back thanks to a first down run by Dustin Spohn.

The offense was led by the rushing attack of Dower. He ran for 139 yards on seven carries in the first half alone. He went on to rush for 153 yards in the game setting a new career high.

Brendon Foss pulled in two touchdowns of his own with 181 yards receiving on 10 catches.

The defense was led by 12 tackles from Cody Hickman who had one sack, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a pass breakup. Zeke Miller forced a fumble and Terrence Chasten-Davis had the fumble recovery.

The Cougars are on the road this Saturday when they take on the Storm of Crown in St. Bonifacius. The game is set for 1 p.m
