Cougars improve to 2-1 with win at MacMurray

The University of Minnesota, Morris football team defeated MacMurray College 24-21 to improve to 2-1 on the year and 2-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Cougars' Dan Garrigan had two touchdown passes including a 53-yard strike to Danny Kernan to seal the victory in the fourth quarter.

The Cougars were out gained 316-256, but forced four turnovers including three lost fumbles.

Zeke Miller had 11 tackles and one forced fumble to lead the defense.

MacMurray opened up the scoring early in the first half as Deshonta Smallow caught a 27-yard pass from Cody Hussey.

Dustin Spohn answered for the Cougars with 1:38 left in the first quarter on a one-yard touchdown run. Spohn led UMM in rushing with 28 yards on 13 carries.

Halfway through the second quarter MacMurray took the lead back thanks to another touchdown pass from Hussey.

Just before halftime freshman Roumy Desir caught a 22-yard pass from Garrigan to tie the game up at 14 after Cameron Adel's extra point.

Adel hit a 41-yard field goal to put UMM up 17-14. Adel is now 3-3 on field goal opportunities this season. It was the only scoring in the third quarter.

Garrigan connected on the touchdown pass to Kernan with 3:55 left in the game to push the lead to 24-14.

MacMurray did not go silently as Patrick Hall scored on a run from three yards out. MacMurray tried an onside kick, but was unsuccessful as UMM ran out the clock to hold on to win.

UMM will be back in action this Saturday as they host Greenville for homecoming at Big Cat Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
