Cougar women shut out in soccer opener

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team started the season playing two straight MIAC foes in three days, suffering 3-0 shut outs to both Hamline and Augsburg.

The Cougars opened the 2012 season Saturday hosting Hamline in a 3-0 shut out.

The Pipers scored all three of their goals in the first half. The first two goals were scored within seven minutes of each other, breaking the game open. The final goal came in the 40th minute.

The Pipers got their first goal in the 22nd minute, when Aileen Scheibner scored her first of two goals on the day. Just seven minutes later Scheibner assisted teammate Aubrey Stenson for the next goal, putting the match at 2-0 in favor of the Pipers.

Then in the 40th minute Scheibner scored her second and last goal of the day giving Hamline a 3-0 lead, which would turn out to be the final.

Rikki Beaver ended the day with five saves.

The Cougars were also out shot 17 to 3.

Augsburg 3

UM-Morris 0

Playing their first road game of the season against their second straight MIAC foe, the Cougars were shut out 3-0 by Augsburg College Monday.

AC put up 27 shots in comparison to just one by UMM.

All-UMAC keeper Rikki Beaver did her best stopping seven of the 10 shots on goal.

Augsburg opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a strike to the corner of the net from the center of the 18-yard box. UMM stayed close and kept AC off the board for a majority of the rest of the game as Beaver and company did not allow a goal until the 76th minute, that goal came off a penalty kick. Augsburg put the game away in the 86th minute scoring off a free kick.

Next up for UMM will be Saturday as they travel to take on Wisconsin-Superior at 1 p.m.
