Gators host first meet this season

The Minnewaska/ Morris/Chokio-Alberta swimming and diving team hosted Montevideo Thursday at the RFC. The Gators dropped their first home meet 116-69.

The Gators were not at full strength, with senior sprinter and diver Julie Helander still out with a collarbone injury and sprinter Paige Hawkins still out from a viral infection.

"Two people doesn't seem like a lot to many people, but they represent eight events (in which) we could have scored more points," said coach Linda Hoffmann.  "Though the score looks lopsided, many races were inches apart from a first, second and a third.

"I was pleased with our poise in our close races," added Hoffmann. "In our lineup I had many eighth, ninth grade swimmers swimming in varsity events. We had good finishes for a young team.

"The highlight was ninth grader Emily Edmunds come-from-behind swim in the 100 fly to out touch a Montevideo swimmer and drop six seconds from the previous meet. It shows to the coaches, the 'never say die attitude' and we like that from a young and promising swimmer."

Meanwhile, the Gators' JV team comprised of mostly seventh and eighth graders swam to a 73-71 victory.

Bridget Opdahl continued her reign of domination in the water with breaking the 100 fly Minnewaska school record set by Erika Danielson in 1999 of 1:02.41  with a time of 1:02.00. She nearly clipped Danielson's mark in the 200 IM of 2:23.85, but Opdahl swam a 2:25.75.

"She will try to get that one hopefully the next time she swims it."
