Tiger tennis season in full swing

The Tiger tennis team starts the 2012 season with two new co-coaches, Heidi Greene and Britney Greenwaldt.

Long-time coach Jim Gillis left the program in good hands, including those of assistant coach Eric Buchanan and a varsity squad made up of all upper-classmen.

The tennis season officially got into full swing Friday, Aug. 17 for Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta when the Tigers hosted a triangular on the home court. The Tigers also participated in a quadrangular in Osakis where they picked up their first win.

Greene hopes to see more victories as the season progresses.

"I would like for us to be more competitive and show growth as a team," Greene said. "We want the girls to have fun, enjoy the game, and have positive sportsmanship."

Greene shares those goals with her co-coach, Greenwaldt.

"It's really nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of during practice," added Greene. "It's also nice to have an extra pair of eyes during matches."

Greene, starting her second year as a third-grade teacher at Morris Area Elementary School, learned the game of tennis from her grandmother, a tennis pro. She went on to play first doubles in varsity for the Minnewaska Lakers.

Greene has gotten to know some of the players through coaching freshman softball the past two seasons.

Greenwaldt returns to the same courts where she played tennis during her high school years at Morris Area. She went on to play tennis at Bemidji State University and begins her teaching career this fall in the science department at Morris Area.
