Tigers lose two seniors

Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta had four baseball players named to the All-West Central Conference team and one honorable mention. Receiving all-conference honors were (from left) Tom Holland, Jacob Torgerson, Tanner Picht, and Sam Mattson, with Chandler Erickson receiving an honorable mention.

Despite a slow start, the Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta baseball team finished the 2012 season third in Section 3AA.

"It's amazing how we started out so poorly," explained first-year head coach Mark Torgerson. "Then we won 14 out of 15, including 11 in a row. That was a real good run."

Six games into the season the Tigers' record was 1-5, but that's when the game turned around for the young team.

Torgerson said the team improved because the players practiced hard and kept their spirits up.

"The real key was how well we pitched in that streak of 11 wins."

Senior Sam Mattson's 9-2 record is the second highest number of wins in the program's history. Dave Taffe had 10 in 1974.

Junior pitcher Jacob Torgerson was 4-2, including a perfect game against Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City.

The Tiger defense did a good job of backing up their pitchers throughout that winning streak.

On the offensive side, the Tigers didn't record as many home runs this season.

"The new bats held down some of the power numbers."

Tanner Picht moved into the top five in the program's history with 35 hits. He's tied in sixth place for single-season hits recorded.

Besides Mattson, the only other senior on the roster was Brody Bahr.

"Brody was solid at third base," added Torgerson. "They both gave us good senior leadership.

The growth experienced by this year's juniors give Torgerson hope for next season.

"We've got a good core coming back," he said. "
