It's a learning season for MBA Storm girls

The 2011-2012 Morris Benson Area girls' hockey season will be a learning experience for the team and new head coach Jeremiah Day.

While Day is new to working with the girls' team, as well as coaching at the varsity level, he is no stranger to the sport or the Storm hockey program.

Day, a Morris Area graduate, played the game in high school when it was still Tiger hockey.

He has nine years of coaching experience at the Squirt, Pee Wee, and most recently, the Bantam level.

While there have been some girls on his teams, this is the first time he has coached all girls.

"It's very different coaching a group of girls," he said. "It's a whole different ball game."

Fortunately, Day will have help from veteran assistant coach Rick Moesenthin.

The Storm girls are a small and young team.

"We're all learning," Day said. "It will take some time to get over the growing pains.

"They're playing great for the age level we're at," added Day.

With only 12 players on the roster, the girls are getting a lot of playing time. Day says that the experience will help the girls improve as the season progresses.

"We've got time to get better," he said.

There is only one senior on the roster. Jaimie Bergerson has returned to the ice after taking a couple years off.

Sophomore Morgan DeHaan returns with some varsity experience.

Two freshmen are on the team, Abby Daly and Shianne Wold.

The rest of the roster includes eighth graders Kayla Benson, Danielle Moseng, Kamri Kalthoff, Hanna Lindblad, Kelsey Rajewsky, Maryssa Austvold, Shayla Shropshire, and seventh grader Holli Christians.

The Storm season officially started Nov. 12 when they played host to Park Rapids in Benson. On Nov. 15 the Storm traveled to Detroit Lakes.

The Storm were shut out in both games, falling to Park Rapids 13-0 and Detroit Lakes 18-0.

Day is not discouraged. The season is young and his team doesn't give up.
