Junior Legion: Morris 0-3 at Starbuck tourney, falls to Willmar

The Morris Junior Legion baseball team went 0-4 over the week, including going 0-3 at the Starbuck tournament this past Saturday and Sunday, July 8 and 9 in Glenwood. Morris closed out the regular season on Friday, July 14 at Kerkhoven and now will open up North Sub-District 7 playoffs next Tuesday, July 18 as the No. 3 seed out of four teams.

Starbuck 10, Morris 1

Morris took on the host team in the opener of the Starbuck tournament at Minnewaska Area High School in Glenwood on Saturday, July 8. Starbuck jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 10-1 victory over Morris.

Seven fielding errors by Morris were a factor as Starbuck earned just one run in the win. Jack Riley had two doubles in the game.

Jaret Johnson went 2-for-3 and scored the lone run of the game for Morris. He also took the loss on the hill, going four innings. He gave up six runs (one earned) on just two hits and walked seven. Jordan Leuthardt gave up four unearned runs on six hits in the final three innings in relief.

Paynesville 12, Morris 2

In game two on Saturday, Paynesville took a 12-2 win in five innings over Morris. Jaret Johnson and Colten Scheldorf got the only two hits in the game for Morris.

Hutchinson 2, Morris 0

In the seventh place game, Hutchinson scored once in the second and once in the fourth to top Morris 2-0.

Morris’ Colten Scheldorf held Hutchinson to just four hits in the game while giving up two earned runs. He walked four and struck out five in his six innings on the mound.

Kevin Asfeld led Morris at the plate with two hits.

Willmar 6, Morris 1

Ashton Gregory and Drey Dirksen combined to throw a two-hit ballgame for Willmar in a 6-1 win over Morris Friday, July 7 in Morris.

Gregory allowed the two lone hits in his five innings of work to Morris’ Colten Scheldorf, who went 2-for-3 with a double.

Junior legion wrapped up the regular season at Kerkhoven on Friday, July 14. Morris will now open up playoffs as the No. 3 seed on Tuesday, July 18. Morris will play at No. 2 Kerkhoven Kerkhoven at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. In the double elimination format, win or lose Morris will play again at Minnewaska Area High School on Friday, July 21. The loser plays the loser of No. 1 Starbuck and No. 4 Benson at 6 p.m. while the winners play at 8 p.m.
