The No. 4-seeded Brandon-Evansville Legion Post 188 baseball team sparked its offense in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-3 win over No. 5-seeded Morris Legion Post 29 in a sub-district play-in game on Tuesday, July 11 in Evansville.

Morris started the scoring in the second inning. Denner Dougherty was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame, then Mitchell Dufault drew a four-pitch walk. Brock Anderson then dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. A sacrifice fly to center field by Tyler Reimers scored Dougherty to give Morris a 1-0 lead.

That lead would hold until the fourth inning when Brandon-Evansville found its offense to go ahead for good. Kevin Campbell drew a leadoff walk and reached second on an error. A RBI single by Tanner Bitzan was followed by another hit from Robbie Juul. Then with one out and Nick Thorstad and Ross Anderson at second and third, Marshall Riedel singled to right field, scoring both runners to make it 3-1. Trey Bosek then lined one to right field that dropped in the gap. He finished the play at third, scoring Riedel in the process to make it 4-1.

Brandon-Evansville tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Three straight singles from Kevin Campbell, Tanner Bitzan, and Robbie Juul loaded the bases. A sacrifice by Nick Thorstad scored the first run of the inning. It was followed by a RBI single from Ross Anderson and a RBI walk by Caden Fernholz to give B-E a 7-1 lead.

Morris got one back in the top of the sixth after errors in the field by B-E. Mitchell Dufault scored on a two-out single by Alex Daugherty.

Brandon-Evansville got that run right back in the bottom half. Bitzan scored from third when Thorstad got into a rundown between first and second. Thorstad held out long enough before being tagged out to allow Bitzan to score B-E’s eighth run of the game.

Morris added a run in the seventh when Chase Metzger scored on a RBI single from Dufault, but could not get any close, falling 8-3.

Dufault had went 1-for-3 with a RBI and run scored as Morris finished the game with five hits compared to B-E’s 10.

Toby Sayles was tagged with the loss. After pitching three no-hit innings, his final 1.67 innings B-E was able to score seven runs on eight hits. Sayles walked three and hit two batters before finishing with seven strikeouts.
