Season ends for Post 29

Brody Bahr makes it back to the base, as Granite Falls tries to pick him off at first.

Two costly errors in the bottom of the third inning led to six unearned runs as Granite Falls ended the season of Morris Legion Post 29 with a 6-3 win in District 7 action on Thursday night in Montevideo.

Ironically, they were the only two errors that Morris would commit on the night while Granite Falls made seven, but Post 29 could not capitalize on them as they hit into three double plays in the game.

Morris ends their season with a 13-4 record.

Tyler Hansen took the loss, going 2-2/3 innings and giving up five unearned runs on three hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. Sam Mattson finished up with 3-1/3 innings. Mattson allowed four hits, walked one, and struck out three.

Cole Riley led the Post 29 offense with three hits.

Morris got on the scoreboard first when Cole Riley hit a one-out single in the top of the second and he came all the way around to score when Mitch Kill reached on a bunt single and the ball was thrown into right field. After a strike out Ethan Bruer came through with a clutch single to score Kill.

Hansen was very sharp, setting down seven of the first eight Granite Falls hitters before the problems started with one out in the third. Four hits and three walks off of both Hansen and Mattson, along with the two errors, led to the six unearned runs.

Post 29 staged a two-out rally in the top of the fourth when Brody Bahr was hit by a pitch and Bruer walked. Alex Erickson drove in Bahr with a single and Hansen drew a walk to load the bases and bring leading hitter Ryan Beyer to the plate. Beyer flew out to right field to end the threat and leave the score at 6-3.

The first two runners reached in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and the final double play of the night ended the season for Post 29.

With the end of the season for the senior class of this team, they finished their summer ball careers with a combined record of 119-32. Included were two state championships (12U & 14U), a state runner-up finish (13U), a fifth place state finish (VFW), a District runner-up (Legion), District 3rd place (VFW), and a District 4th place (Legion).
