Owl girls take first place in Pacesetter tournament

On Saturday, June 25th, the Hancock varsity girls basketball team hosted a Pacesetter Tournament at the UMM PE Center. Hancock, Yellow Medicine East, Wheaton-Herman-Norcross, and Buffalo Lake Hector Stewart were the participating teams.

To begin the day, Hancock played all of the teams in a 20 minute pool play game to determine the seeds for the tournament. The Owls finished with the number one seed with the following scores:

Win over WHN 21-6

Tie with YME 17-17

Win over BLHS 21-16

In the opening round of the tournament, the Owls were matched up against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross (No. 4 seed) and defeated the Warriors 43-31. The girls played an outstanding first half leading 23-7, but struggled with scoring in the second half while the WHN snuck back into this game. Shae Brown had the hot hand in the first half scoring 10 of her 12 points.

The Owls had a nice balanced scoring attack with Courtney Greiner leading the way with 14, Shae Brown with 12, Kendra Schmidgall with 8, Olivia Koehl with 5, and Serandon Bigalke with 4 points.

Olivia Koehl led the rebounding with 5, while Shae and Kendra led the steals with 4 each. Kendra also dished out 6 assists.

In the Championship game, Hancock was matched up against YME and won 43-28. The girls looked sharp from start to finish in this game.

Courtney Greiner led the way with 20 points, followed by Kendra Schmidgall with 11, Shae Brown 9 points (3 treys), Karol Algarate with 2 points, and Olivia Koehl with 1 point. Olivia led the rebounding again with 7 boards and led the steals with 3. Kendra Schmidgall led the assists with 6.

"Serandon did a great job of taking care of the basketball in this game, while Sami Schmidgall played some quality minutes throughout the tournament." said coach Jodi Holleman "It was great to have Kayla Crowell, Sam Vasek, Gabbi Nienhaus, and Claire Spohr run the clocks, help with the tournament, and provide depth on the varsity bench.
