VFW wins opener, takes consolation championship trophy

The Morris VFW baseball season got off to a start with a win at Benson and a 3-1 showing at the Cold Spring/Sartell Tournament last weekend.

The VFW started the season on a great note by cracking out 15 hits while defeating Benson 19-2 in Benson Wednesday, June 8.

Jake Torgerson was the winning pitcher.

Morris batted around twice in the third inning plating 14 runs on their way to victory.

Leading the hit attack was Jordan Staples and Jake Torgerson with three hits apiece, while Tom Holland and Chandler Erickson each had two hits.

Leaders in the RBI department with two each were Torgerson, Tyler Henrichs, and Lincoln Berget.

Robinsdale 3

Morris 0

In the opening game against Robinsdale Armstrong, Chandler Erickson hooked up with Konner from Armstrong in an old fashioned pitching duel.

Erickson went eight innings giving up no runs on six hits and striking out nine.

Armstrong won the game in the 10th inning plating three runs on two walks, an error, and a hit batter.

Alexandria 1

In game two, Mac Beyer took the mound and Morris cruised to an 11-1 win over Alexandria.

Tom Holland and Staples had three hits apiece and Tanner Picht, Beyer, and Erickson each had two hits.

Perham 3

Game three pitted Morris against Perham. Morris came out on top 13-3 in five innings.

Tyler Henrichs was the winning pitcher. Henrichs helped his cause with a three-run home run in the fourth inning to put Morris comfortably ahead.

Picht, Staples, and Erickson again were the hitting stars with two apiece.

Delano 6

In the consolation championship game, Morris defeated Delano 16-6.

Torgerson came in in relief to pick up the win.

Erickson and Staples hit the ball well all weekend and each banged out three more hits against Delano.

The following players each got two hits: Holland, Picht, Henrichs, Torgerson, and Nic Vipond.

Bryce Jergenson collected his first hit in a VFW uniform after good at bats all weekend long.

Morris collected 40 runs on 46 hits and with only three errors.

Madison 1

The Tuesday, June 14 game against Madison was suspended.

With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the rain began to fall and did not quit. This game will pick up where it left off later this season.

Morris has a runner on first base with one out.

Mac Beyer threw his second straight gem holding Madison to two hits and giving up just one unearned run.
