Shoot-out in Hancock Dec. 18

Hancock High School will host the First Annual Minnesota Basketball News State Basketball Shooting Contest on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 10:30 a.m. in the high school gym as a fund raiser to support Hancock basketball programs, the Stevens County food shelf and Minnesota Basketball News.

Interested shooters may walk in and register any time between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Everyone in Minnesota from third grade to 80+ is eligible to enter. Shooters will elect to shoot free throws or 3-point shots each time they enter. Each shooter will be asked to donate $10 to shoot up to 100 shots. Shooters may stop at 25 shots or 50 shots and record their percentage as their official score or shoot all 100 shots. Participants may enter as many times as they choose in each category of shots in an attempt to record their highest possible score.

Shooting sites are being scheduled throughout Minnesota and will run from December through April. The shooting schedule will be updated online at with the exact times for each contest site. The first scores will be recorded in the January edition of MBBN and on the Pacesetter Sports website at All shooters will be ranked in thirteen age groups by gender.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx are supporting this statewide contest to find the best shooters in Minnesota by providing a free ticket to each participant. Top shooters will be recognized on the Target Center floor at both a Timberwolves' and Lynx game. The best shooters will also be invited to demonstrate their skills as halftime entertainment during some of these games.

Participants can sign up in the Hancock School office or they can just show up and register at the door on Saturday. Lunch will be sold during the shoot-out. Various scrimmages and shooting contests (free of charge) will be held in the small gym while you wait for your turn to participate in the shoot out.

Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the week to win basketballs, water bottles, t-shirts, treats, and many other prizes. These tickets can be purchased from any varsity player or at the event. You do not need to be present to win.
