Cougar men improve to 6-1-1 in UMAC

With a pair of victories over Presentation College, the University of Minnesota, Morris men's soccer team has now won five straight, and are unbeaten in six straight.

As they begin the stretch run, the Cougars are still chasing unbeaten St. Scholastica, whose one conference blemish is a 0-0 tie to the Cougars from Sept. 25.

With their second win in three days over Presentation, UMM improved to 7-3-3 overall and 6-1-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

The Cougars return home this weekend to close out the home schedule, hosting Northland and St. Scholastica.

Jeff Lind logged his first goal of the season just 16 minutes into the match for the game-winner. Lind took a rebound right in front of the net and slipped it past the Saint goalkeeper for the early 1-0 lead, and the Cougars never looked back. Lind was in the right place and the right time, as it was a Greg Borchers shot that was coming off the keeper and left unattained.

Presentation was on the defensive all game as the Cougars controlled play down in the Saint zone for much of the 90 minutes. The Cougars fired off 20 total shots in the match, marking the fourth time this season they have reached the 20-shot mark, as well as the second straight.

The Cougars' 10 shots on goal marks the third time in double-digits this season, and the five goals sits behind just the seven scored against Northland.

After Lind put the Cougars on the board, leading scorer Toby Glaser   scored the first of his two goals in the game, making good on a breakaway and finishing off a pass from Matt Vik.

Glaser also closed the game's scoring with the Cougars' final goal, early in the second half. Again he finished off a pass from Vik for the final 5-0 decision.

Glaser also added an assist, his team-leading third of the season.

The Cougars' first two goals came less than two minutes apart, and their third and fourth goals came just over four minutes apart. In closing the first half, Ryan Cadigan put UMM up 3-0 with the second rebound goal of the day, and Mark Halverstadt put a header in the back of the net for his first career goal and the 4-0 halftime advantage.

The Cougar defense allowed just five total shots from the Saints, with only three of them reaching goalkeeper Tyler Simpson. The senior netminder is unbeaten since Sept. 18, and preserved the streak by stopping all three shots he saw.

The Cougars kept up their winning ways Sunday, Oct. 10 with a 2-0 win over Presentation.

The Cougars split their scoring, notching a goal in each the first and second halves. It did not take long for the scoring to start, as the Cougars buried one of their fastest goals of the year, getting on the board at just the 5:04 mark. Dustin Lee scored his second goal of the season, making good on an assist from Matt Johnson.

The Cougars were held off the board for the rest of the first half, and for over 20 minutes to start the second half. The pressure was not off however, as the Cougars pressed their way to 33 total shots in the match. In the first half alone UMM put up 21 shots, and held the Saints to just two in each half.

The Cougars put nine shots on goal in the match, including two from Glaser, one of which came at the 66:47 point of the second half and put the Cougars up 2-0. His third goal of the weekend, Glaser scored on the first career assist from Michael Ward.

Tyler Weber started in goal for the first time since Sept. 10, and earned his first win of the season. The shutout is his second of the year, along with his 0-0 double overtime tally in the opener. Weber made two saves in the match.
