Cougar women shut out Presentation twice

The University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team improved to 5-6-4 overall and 4-2-2 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action with a pair of wins over Presentation College. The Cougars came off a 7-0 win over the Saints Friday, Oct. 8 at Cougar field and did themselves one better with an 8-0 decision Sunday on the road.

With back-to-back wins the Cougars will look to continue their streak this weekend as they close out the home schedule. On Saturday they host Northland and on Sunday they host St. Scholastica. Each match is set for a 2 p.m. start at Cougar Field.

The Cougars finished off the first half of the conference season by defeating Presentation 7-0 at home on Friday, Oct. 8.

The scoring came early and often for the Cougars, as they outshot the Saints 38-2. The Cougar offense controlled play and racked up seven corners to just one for the Saints. In their last two games the Cougars have out-cornered their opponents 27-3.

Notching her fourth goal of the season for the Cougars, Zoe Bergstrom scored in the 15th minute of the game. It was the first of three for the freshman, as she moves into the team scoring lead. Half way through the conference season she has six goals and three assists for 15 points.

In opening the scoring, Bergstrom received a pass from Meghan Laird before putting the ball in the back of the net.

The Cougars came back fast, scoring just over three minutes later. Sarah Timpane scored her second goal of the season when she put the ball right over the keeper in the 18th minute.

Four minutes later, Bergstrom got her second, this time off an assist from Melissa Denler. The score would remain 3-0 Cougars going into halftime.

The Cougars continued in the second half where they left off in the first, getting their fourth goal of the match less than 10 minutes into the period. After the opening-score assist, Laird got back in the scoring mix in the 55th minute with an unassisted breakaway goal

Less than thirty seconds later, UMM went up 5-0 on another Timpane goal, this time on an assist from Nicole Rae.

Bergstrom and Laird finished off the scoring for the Cougars, each with a goal in the final 20 minutes.

Bergstrom's career day wrapped up with three goals as well as an assist for good measure, while fellow freshman Laird was close behind with two goals and an assist.

As the Cougars racked up their 38 shots, they put a season high 24 on goal, keeping Saint goalkeeper Katie Schuchardt busy all afternoon. Schuchardt finished with 17 saves.

The Cougars started off the second half of the conference season Sunday, Oct. 10, scoring seven second-half goals in an 8-0 win at Presentation.

The Cougars took 29 shots, while holding the Saints to just four, and saw seven different players factor into the scoring.

Presentation was able to hold the Cougars to just one first-half goal, and it could have been none, if the ball had not went off a Saint defender for the period's only score.

The one goal game-winner came at the 35:07 mark, giving the Cougars a lead they would never relinquish.

Leah Parker was the star of the day, netting the hat trick with a trio of goals, using assists from a different teammate on each occasion. In the 62nd minute Parker finished after a pass from Taylor Meehan to put the Cougars up 3-0, then in the 80th minute she used the second career helper from Melissa Denler to put UMM up 5-0, before her final tally in the 85th minute off an assist from Rachel Harstad. The assist was the first of the season for Harstad.

Laird opened the second half scoring with a goal just over two minutes into the period, scoring at 47:15 on an assist from Bergstrom.

Bergstrom added another assist and a goal, giving her four goals and three assists in a weekend that earned her Offensive Player of the Week honors from the UMAC.

Katie Kestner and Meehan tallied the final two scores for the Cougars, who put 18 shots on goal in the match.
