Tim Grove named UMAC coach of the year

The last thing women's basketball head coach Tim Grove would want to see in an article about team and individual awards is his name at the top of that article, especially if it had to with his being named Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the 2009-10 season.

"[That award] has so little do with me and everything to do with my players," he says.

But it is an unavoidable fact that Grove has earned that honor for a stellar season in which his team went 19-6, exhibiting a superior brand of team play where minutes, points and assists were spread evenly deep into the roster.

In conference play, Grove led the Cougar women to a first-place regular season finish, going 13-1 against UMAC opponents. They are currently riding a 14-game winning streak into the postseason.

For all the unselfish play on offense, Grove says the difference is made at the other end of the court.

"The aspects that make a good team a championship team are defense and rebounding."

Defense and rebounding are two things the Cougars have done very well this season, holding opponents to just 58 points per game, and limiting teams to 31 rebounds per contest (best in the UMAC).

This is Grove's fourth season as head coach and his first Coach of the Year honor.

The Cougar women start the postseason Thursday evening when they host Presentation College in the UMAC semifinals at the P.E. Center.
