Owls' press a key in win over BBE

The Hancock Owls girls basketball team blew out Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa early and coasted to a 58-34 win Jan. 5 in Belgrade.

The Owls led 38-10 at halftime.

"I was very happy with the performance of all of the girls," coach Jodi Holleman said. "They came out strong in the opening half."

The Owls unveiled a new 1-3-1 press that helped them pick up eight steals, which resulted in several transition baskets.

"Kaylee Voorhees played her best game of the season both offensively and defensively," Holleman said. "She played with a ton of heart, hustle, and determination. It is great to have Lindsie Cunningham back at full strength, as she played a solid game.

Hancock pulled out of its pressing defense in the second half and concentrated on half court defenses, Holleman said.

"It was great to get all of the girls into the ball game," she said. "We worked extremely hard on fundamentals over break and it really showed out on the court. Overall, this was a nice team victory."

The Owls host another conference game against Ortonville on Friday, Jan. 15.
