Owl football team begins action on Sept. 4

August 17 brought the beginning of Hancock Owl Football for the 2009 season. The Owls are fresh off of their third place finish at the Northern State University Team Camp and are looking forward to the coming season. Jake Ascheman, Drew Schmidgall, Cory Schroeder, and Brendon Foss will serve as team captains this year. Those captains are a part of the ten seniors who are the core of the team this season. There are currently 27 Owls out for the team.

The seniors are, Jake Ascheman who is a returning captain and a starter on offense and defense. Brendon Foss, who was a two way starter and area leader in receiving last year. Drew Schmidgall, Cory Schroeder, and Travis Nohl each who were two way starters last year. Wade Feuchtenberger, Shem Baker, Rosendo Lopez each will have expanded roles and will compete to be starters on offense or defense this season. New to the team this season is Jason Schaefer and Blake Swenson.

Juniors on the team this year are Mark Schaefer, who is expected to be the starting quarterback this year. Nick Marczak will be a lineman, Chanc Nack will be a receiver and defensive back, Samuel Roth is new to the team and will play receiver and defensive back.

The sophomores on the team include Michells Algarate, Bryce Wilson, Jeffrey Peterson, James Newhouse, Brady Koehl, Bryan Shaw, Daniel Lonneman, Collin Cunningham, and Austin Steege. Freshman just joining the team are Jerrid Jepma, Evan Nelson, Seth Nelson, and Micah Baker.

Head Coach Matthew Hone returns for another season of Owls football.

Brandon Welle joins the coaching staff as a new assistant and will run the offense. Cory Bedel is back as an assistant in charge of the special teams and the junior high program. "Strong numbers, experienced seniors, and fresh enthusiasm for a new season are our greatest strengths right now," commented Coach Hone. Fresh ideas mixed with experienced Owls players will be the recipe for Hancock success. The season begins September 4 with a 7 p.m. game at Bertha-Hewitt.
