Owl GBB team places 2nd at UMM pacesetter tournament

On Saturday, July 18, the Lady Owls finished runner-up at the UMM Pacesetter tournament that was hosted by Hancock. The following teams participated in this tournament: Hancock, LQPV, Ashby, West Central Area, Fulda, Buffalo, Aitkin, Mora, and Melrose. It was great to bring in some quality schools from different areas of Minnesota.

In the opening round Hancock was matched up against LQPV and defeated them by a score of 47-31. Stats were as follows:

Comments from Coach Holleman: "The Lady Owls led 32-19 at halftime and never looked back. The Eagles struggled with the presses which led to some easy transition buckets. It was great to get all of the girls into the game."

In the next round, Hancock was matched up against Buffalo (Class AAA). We knew that this would be some tough competition as Buffalo went to State last year. The Lady Owls played some outstanding team basketball and won by a score of 28-20. Stats were as follows

Comments: "The girls played some very disciplined basketball in this game. Buffalo played outstanding defense, and we ran several minutes off the clock on each possession before we ran a quick-hit play. The girls took excellent care of the basketball in the final minute to seal the deal."

In the Championship round Hancock was matched up against Fulda which brought back many memories from three years ago when we met them in the finals of the State Tournament. This game was more like a football game than a basketball game with the score tied at 21-21 at the half. Fulda was the stronger team and out-muscled the Owls for a victory. Stats were as follows:

Comments: "Overall, this was a great experience for all the girls as the Varsity AND the JV team finished runner-up in this tourney. The Lady Owls just came off a three-day dribble camp prior to entering this tournament and looked fundamentally sharp. We just need to hit the weight room more before we start the season and we will have another extremely successful season at HHS. It looks like we will have about 13 girls that will have an opportunity to contribute at the varsity level this year."

Buffalo defeated Mora for third place honors in this tournament while LQPV defeated Ashby for Consolations Champions. In the JV bracket, the New London Spicer Wildcats were champions while the LADY OWLS took runner-up honors. The Hancock girls will put in a big week of practice as we prepare for the Annual Sweet 16 tournament in St. Cloud on August 1 and August 2 at the Whitney Center. The top four teams in Class A, AA, AAA, and AAAA were selected to compete in this elite tournament to determine the top teams in the State. We are VERY honored that we received this invitation and plan on making some big waves for Class A!!

Tentative teams participating in the Sweet 16 Tournament:

Class A: Hancock, Cedar Mtn Comfrey, Bigfork, and Murray Co. Central

Class AA: Mpls. North, New London Spicer, Braham, Mpls Roosevelt

Class AAA: New Prague, Worthington, Bemidji, Orono

Class AAAA: Hopkins, Chaska, Lakeville North, and Eastview.
